Defective Items

Defects are described as anything which will render the board as unusable such as cracks, splits, or warps. Natural coloration of the wood is not a defect. All defective items will be repaired, replaced or refunded. Defective items accepted for return will be shipped back to us at our expense. Return shipping to the customer will also be at our expense. Returned items must be in the original packaging, sent insured.

Repair, replacement or refund will be at our sole discretion.

Returned items must be in the original packaging, sent insured. Original and return shipping costs of non-defective items will be the responsibility of the customer.

Customer Induced Damage

All items with customer induced damage will not be acceptable for returns.

Special Orders

Due to the customer specific nature of special orders, special order boards are not eligible for returns.

Freight Damages, Loss, or Theft

As of October, 2022, The Boardsmith is using allowing customers to purchase Route Shipping Insurance as a third party insurer on packages. In the event your shipment is lost, stolen (eg porch pirates), or damaged in transit, Route will replace your items. This insurance is entirely optional and The Boardsmith does not profit in any way from the service. If you elect NOT to get shipping insurance, and if your order is damaged, lost, or stolen while in transit, you are agreeing to assume liability for that loss or damage.

Historically, loss, theft, or damage occurs in approximately 1% of shipments. Incidents are normally far higher during the Christmas season than at other times of the year.

Crafted with sustainably harvested Black Walnut. These boards have a deep chocolate color highlighted with black streaks and some lighter-colored sapwood. Some black walnut end grain cutting boards are fairly consistent in color, and others have high contrast between lighter and darker woods

Of the three hardwoods we use, walnut arguably has the highest 'Wow!' factor. In terms of durability, the walnut end grain butcher block has the perfect balance of scratch resistance and gentleness on knife edges

While we can't guarantee any particular look, you are welcome to request a preference in the 'comments' section and we will accommodate if we have one available. Some customers prefer it more uniform and others like high contrast.

Built to be beautiful. Built to last.

Just Bummed

I was just really bummed when I opened it to see that it did not look like I expected. I wanted high contrast within each piece (i.e., the fade from light to dark in the corners of each piece), but they thought I wanted contrast between each piece. So it came out with a "brick-y" look where pieces in the middle were significantly lighter than the rest of the board. It's not really anyone's fault that there was a miscommunication, and it will still work as a cutting board. It just sucks to be the one that paid so much to not get something even close to what I was expecting, which is why I rated it 2 stars.

Really sorry to hear that, Morgan. We worked hard and intentionally to send you a board with high contrast, to convert your signature into an engravable file at no extra charge, and to try to give you a product you'd love. I think we had 10 back and forth emails, and I did everything I knew to do to make you happy. We all feel that your block is absolutely gorgeous. I'm sorry you don't care for it.

As a gentle reminder (especially with walnut), there's an incredible amount of variation in the wood grain and in the degree of contrast. We can never guarantee any particular wood grain pattern, though we do try to accommodate when we can (and we REALLY did on yours).

Walnut end grain cutting board 12x18

Beautifully made almost don’t want to use it but honestly it will hold up to daily use and expect it will be used for decades with proper care. Please note that many of the reviews highlight the quality and matching of the end grain blocks. This is accurate there was great detail in selecting the grain. A quality cutting board

A work of art.

The walnut end grain cutting board custom made for us by the Boardsmith is truly a work of art. John was very helpful throughout the process and used a photo I sent him to guide the design of the board. Everything about working with Boardsmith was exceptional.
