Crafted with sustainably harvested Black Walnut. These boards have a deep chocolate color highlighted with black streaks and some lighter-colored sapwood. Some black walnut end grain cutting boards are fairly consistent in color, and others have high contrast between lighter and darker woods

Of the three hardwoods we use, walnut arguably has the highest 'Wow!' factor. In terms of durability, the walnut end grain butcher block has the perfect balance of scratch resistance and gentleness on knife edges

While we can't guarantee any particular look, you are welcome to request a preference in the 'comments' section and we will accommodate if we have one available. Some customers prefer it more uniform and others like high contrast.

Built to be beautiful. Built to last.

Love it!

I am thrilled with my new cutting board. I purchased the walnut end grain 12x18. The board is beautiful to look at so I'm happy to leave it out on the counter. The feet make it stable for use and easy to dry after washing. I've only used the board a couple times but so far there are no scratches or cut marks evident from my knives. The 12x18 size is perfect for fitting in my sink for gentle washing. Anything larger would be awkward to rinse.

One piece of constructive feedback to Boardsmith is that my board arrived bone dry. So dry that it was not suitable for use. I oiled the board many times heavily in order to get it to a good place. I don't mind doing that work, however I can see how some customers experience cracking issues with their new boards. People may not understand the extent to which the boards are bone dry. If that is how these boards are shipped then oil should be included with the purchase of the board because it must be done. Personally I think the boards should be oiled more thoroughly before shipping so the customer doesn't assume so much risk with the QC process.

HI Josh, so glad you love your block from us! One point worth clarifying-- every butcher block we make (yours included) gets a minimum of a 30 minute soak in our mineral oil tank, and then is buffed with our board butter, prior to shipping it to you. That normally gets 4-6 ounces of oil in the board, with a good protective top coat of wax. I don't know of any other substantial butcher block manufacturer that takes that kind of care prior to shipping their blocks out. However, you are absolutely right that the boards need oiling when you first get them. We say that explicitly in the care instructions. A 12 X 18 walnut block can hold as much as 8 ADDITIONAL ounces of oil once you receive the board, on top of what we've already put in there. So we definitely support the idea of oiling it up well. Like a cast iron pan, if you give the block 'seasoning' up front, it should only need light ongoing maintenance from there.
