Thousands of small pieces of high quality Maple, Walnut, and Cherry are meticulously combined to craft these one-of-a-kind boards. Each mosaic cutting board will be completely unique; pictures are just a few of the possibilities. These are a labor of love; the value of the hardwood used in a typical 18" X 24" mosaic block approaches $400... before any work is done.

Be sure to order well in advance, as these are labour intensive and made-to-order. Please allow 10+ weeks prior to shipping for your maple, cherry, & walnut cutting board. We cannot guarantee Christmas delivery on any mosaic boards ordered after 10/23.

Note: The first picture in this gallery shows a rectilinear mosaic board (all square and rectangular pieces), while a subsequent picture shows an angular mosaic board (all angular pieces). If you prefer a specific style, just let us know in the 'notes' section at checkout. If no preference is given, we will make a rectilinear board. Any other preferences, feel free to email us at sawdust@theboardsmith.com and we'll be happy to collaborate.

Dimensions on these will be approximate based the nature of construction.

Built to be beautiful. Built to last.

*Photos are for demonstration only. Yours will look unique due to the variations in natural wood. Because of the time required to make them, Mosaics are not eligible for returns.

The Last Cutting Board
You’ll Ever Need

Self-Healing Construction

Vertical wood fibers yield under knife impact and spring back, absorbing cut marks to keep the board smooth.

Saves & Preserves Blade Edges

Far gentler on blades than plastic or flat-grain boards, keeping your knives sharper for longer.

Heirloom Durability

Thicker and sturdier than standard boards, end-grain resists warping and splitting for a lifetime of daily use.

Renewable & Refinishable

Easily sanded down and re-oiled over time to restore the surface to brand-new condition year after year.

A labor of love

Thousands of pieces, one of a kind

Each mosaic is assembled from thousands of small pieces of maple, walnut and cherry over many glue-ups. Please allow 10+ weeks before shipping.

No shortcuts

Crafted by Hand in Texas

Every board is hand-assembled in our Frisco workshop using a professional-grade, FDA-approved waterproof adhesive, an extra step many makers skip. Thanks to our large solid blocks, your knife almost exclusively meets wood.

Know your wood

Three domestic hardwoods, chosen for the job

Hardness is measured on the Janka scale: the force needed to press a steel ball halfway into the wood. Hard enough to last, gentle enough on your knives.

Janka hardness of the woods The Boardsmith uses
WoodJanka hardnessCharacter
Hard Maple 1450 lbf The hardest of our woods. Very small pores help keep moisture and food out.
Black Walnut 1010 lbf Rich, dark brown heartwood. Like all three, durable and kind to knife edges.
Black Cherry 950 lbf Our softest wood, still hard and durable. Darkens from pinkish brown to a deep reddish brown with light.
