A wind check is an internal fracture or separation that runs along the tree's annual growth rings, caused by severe wind stress on a living tree. They are characteristic because the checking is perfectly perpendicular to the annulary rays in the wood grain. Those checks exist at a microscopic level throughout all hard maple, but sometimes become visible. It's possible the check may even close up at some point. It will not affect the function of the board.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis board already comes equipped with Finger Grooves. It is how the tree goes with its unique idiosyncrasies. Since Maple is a lighter wood, those mineral streaks are very visible. These marks can't totally be avoided. In this case, the board is very \"clean\", meaning few mineral marks are visible.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eMaple cutting boards need a lot of oil, so please don't forget to add a care kit!
